As if what Mr. Packer said wasn't bad enough, the timing of his talk was horrid and inexcusable. I doubt it will have any effect where the church is concerned, but please consider signing the petition anyway. Make your voice heard!

From the Human Rights Campaign:

I'm appalled by the recent suicides of gay teens after they experienced merciless bullying.

But this really takes the cake. One of the top leaders in the Mormon Church has apparently chosen this moment to give a horribly anti-gay sermon in front of millions of Mormons, calling same-sex attraction 'impure and unnatural.'

Can you just imagine if you were a gay or lesbian teen in that audience? Or even questioning?

I just added my name to an open letter that will help young people understand the truth -- and help Mormon leaders understand that spreading these lies puts lives at risk. I hope you'll join me:

So this weekend was the Mormon Church's Semi-Annual General Conference. My whole family watched and/or listened, of course, either through satellite TV or online. I, meanwhile, made every effort to ignore it. But I can't ignore this...

LDS Church leader: Homosexuality not 'inborn' )

Now, someone please tell me if I'm reading this correctly... did he actually compare the 'law' of heterosexuality to the law of gravity?? What planet is he from?

It makes me just sick to see the religion my entire family is so active in - that I was raised in - continue to promote such closed-minded and hateful ideas. In addition, I can't help but think of the horrid timing of this speech from Mr. Packer, coming as it does after a long month of suicides by gay teens who had been bullied about their sexual orientation. I'm not implying that the Mormon church condones such bullying, but putting out such a strong message saying that homosexuality is unnatural and immoral certainly won't help.

If you feel like torturing yourself, you can download audio of Mr. Packer's complete talk here (scroll down to the Sunday morning session). A text version will be available on Thursday, according to the church's website. I don't want to hear the whole thing, but I'll probably read it when the text version is available.

On a somewhat-more-humorous-but-not-really note, one of the other church officials warned against becoming addicted to texting, as it would take one away from "important, interpersonal human communication." I'll decide how I communicate with other humans, you idiot.

Huge thanks and hugs to all who left me birthday wishes! If anyone posted in their own journal and I didn't comment on it, please tell me. I did read through my friends page on my b-day, but so so far from perfect and could have missed something. And I don't want to miss anything, 'cause I love you all. Special thanks to [ profile] aqualegia for the yummy virtual cocktail. :-D

To all of you, from me:

In other news... )

Not going to talk about how incredibly disappointed I am in California's Supreme Court. Just know that I am incredibly disappointed, but not really surprised.

That is all for now! Yay for real LJ entries, y/y?

Gay Rights

"Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?" - Ernest Gaines

We would like to know who really believes in gay rights on livejournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this. Thanks.
