Edward Gorey is an author/illustrator who tends to write twisted stories, some about little children dying. Hence the "L is for Leo who swallowed some tacks." He's got a whole alphabet for it.

He happened to do the illustrations for T.S. Elliot's book on cats, from which the musical Cats was adapted.
