Guess the song meme

I really shouldn't inflict my music library on you guys, but who knows? You all might surprise me.

Found on [livejournal.com profile] marauder_bex's and [livejournal.com profile] i_am_tre's journals.

Put your music library on shuffle.
Post the first lines of the first 25 songs that come up.
The game: Guess which songs the first lines are from!
Google is your friend cheating!

ETA: Added a bit more of the lyrics for the ones that haven't been guessed yet. Included hints on some of the more obscure ones too. Try again, you guys. I know you can get more of them than you have so far. I know you can. Or send your friends over to guess. It'll be fun... come on... please?

But too much rejection, uh huh...

  6. Then when you let it
    You asked for nothing
    Why don't you share it
All of the time you live
    There's something out there
(a bit more obscure, I think, though a lot of you should know the band)

  7. The means are right for taking, fade to grey
Trying to be ruthless, in the face of beauty
In this matrix, it's plain to see
    It's either you or me.

  8. I'm ridin' in your car
    You turn on the radio
    You're pullin' me close
    I just say no
    I say I don't like it
But you know I'm a liar
Fire - The Pointer Sisters - [livejournal.com profile] rgrandixie
(lots of speculation on this one... and the most embarrassing one on the list for me - also from the late 70's)

  9. We're caught in a trap I can't walk out Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley (and later covered by Fine Young Cannibals) - [livejournal.com profile] i_am_tre

  10. You wear guilt

  11. Maybe in you I'll believe Maybe I'll believe in you Crumb By Crumb - Rufus Wainwright - [livejournal.com profile] calidearie

  12. Last night I saw a movie
and I thought about many movies I've seen at your house
    excuse me if I'm rude

    leaning on my shoulder
    distracting me from the plotline
(early song by a band we're all talking about right now)

  13. Can you feel me coming
open the door it's only me
    I have that desperate feeling
in trouble is where I'm going to be

  14. Hey now the well run dry
Pages of the book on fire
Read the writing ...on the wall...

    Hoedown, say showdown
    Everywhere you look

Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls
    Brought me here

(I love this song so damn much... incredibly beautiful)

  16. Jamie's on the bathroom floor she don't know why
She's shaking underneath the sink can't feel a thing
She'd love to live a life she's afraid of failure
With all the voices in her head
Now what was that I thought I hear you scream
(slightly more obscure; Canadian artist who has a tie-in to a Canadian ex-gf of Gale Harold)

  17. Sucking on a tap that never dries
Could you take it right between your eyes
    Bending blood, bending blood
The father stood, the father's hood
Like shadow on an acid bird that etched her way across a field
    So long ago
(I don't really expect anyone to get this one. English singer/songwriter. Lyrics tend to be very surrealist, focusing on death, eating or sex. Also had a small acting role in 2004's The Manchurian Candidate)

  18. A house on fire
    A wall of stone
A door that once was open
An empty face and empty bones
    Who ate your heart?
    You're cold inside
You're not the one I hoped for

I'll see you on the other side

  22. Unbidden shadows of you formed yesterday
I ran away to a room here on the bay
Interrupted life again, another new beginning
Where the silence echoes you're no longer with me

Here and now, i feel that i'm embracing freedom
Even though i may be alone, but that's ok
(artist does very ethereal sounding music; they had a remix of one of their songs used in season 2 of QAF)

  23. These are the days of the open hand Praying for Time - George Michael - [livejournal.com profile] katya23

  24. Baby, when you walk that sweet walk
Oh, you walk it good, yes you walk it good
Baby, when you talk that sweet talk
Oh, it sounds so good, oh so good
(classic rock; title has a tie-in to a Cobra bandmember)

  25. She had something to confess to
But you don’t have the time so
    Look the other way
You will wait until it's over
To reveal what you’d never shown her
    Too little much too late
(I don't even know this song well, but love the artist, who has a tie-in to the Twilight saga)

  26. There's a pretty wide variety in there. I did have to skip over a few instrumental songs, and I skipped over one where the first line was the song title. Can't make it too easy, right? So... guesses? And should I post what the songs are after a few days or something?

Hints: There's a couple of classic rock songs in there, a fair amount of 70's, 80's and 90's music, and there are two by FBR/Decaydance artists.

9 is unchained melody by the rightous brothers (unless you're listening to the gareth gates cover) and I think 3 is by boys like girls is it called five minutes to midnight?

[identity profile] i-am-tre.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
3's not blg

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are both wrong, although you kind of have the right idea for #9. Same era anyway.

[identity profile] kingsnvagabonds.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG 3 is by the BeeGees aint it? I remember hearing it at work.

I still recognise 1 and 21 but idk.

re 12 I had to cheat cause of the main band were talking about rn bit and I gotta say I've not got that song by them.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
3 is the Bee Gees, but someone else beat you to it with the song title.
1 has been guessed now too.
21 - I looked on your last.fm profile, and this band is on the list of artists you've listened to, but they're way way down on the list. I can try and come up with a hint for you if you want.
12 - assuming we are talking about the same band, it's very possible you don't have this song. It's from their very first album. I'll probably post the names of the songs that haven't been guessed in a day or two.

[identity profile] kingsnvagabonds.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, ill have to have a look at my last.fm for 21 when I get home then.

And I thought I had all of 12's first album hmm maybe I've not, I hardly listen to it really.

ext_83374: (Default)

[identity profile] i-am-tre.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
noppe :(

[identity profile] darksylvia.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
19. It's you, you, you again - Minimal Peach, Greek Buck

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. You should know a lot more of these songs than just that one though, I think.

[identity profile] darksylvia.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I don't recognize any others!

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you can't figure out #1 I'll be seriously disappointed in you. :-P

[identity profile] katya23.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, you really should know number 1. I didn't guess it in my entry, because I think you should have another chance.

[identity profile] mellicat1963.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
4 is Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Does that song start with the same line? Huh. But I didn't post anything where the first line of the song included the title of the song.

[identity profile] mellicat1963.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No.... I have it wrong, that's not how that song starts.... Nope, don't know any of your

[identity profile] mellicat1963.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I should know 8 - but I can't think of it.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's probably the one song on the list I was sort of embarrassed to include. Late 70's.

[identity profile] disc0-dancer.livejournal.com 2008-12-21 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
20. The Hush Sound - Echo

bc omg, i love that song so hard. :')

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 12:57 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] calidearie.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
11=>Crumb By Crumb - Rufus Wainwright

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ah. Good job! ::applauds::

[identity profile] katya23.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, I'm here from [livejournal.com profile] darksylvia's lj. I figured you wouldn't mind if I guessed a couple?

5. Love to Hate You by Erasure

8. that Turn the Radio Up song? I don't know who sang it, but I really loved it when I was in high school.

23. Praying for Time George Michael

I KNOW I know more of them.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi! I've seen you over there, and you're totally welcome to guess a few!

Check out the edited post. I added a bit more of the lyrics for each of the songs that haven't been guessed yet, including #8. You were right, of course, about #5 and #23. And Leah really should try guessing #1 again. She'll kick herself when she figures it out. LOL

[identity profile] falling-words.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
4 is the Smiths - "There Is A Light"
15 is Ben Folds - "The Luckiest"

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY!!! Both great songs, don't you think? "The Luckiest" just makes me melt.

[identity profile] falling-words.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I do love me some Ben Folds!

And I mean this in no way as a hate on The Smiths but David Ford does the most heart breaking cover of that song I've ever heard in my life. Absolutely gorgeous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWZdtm2apAA

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa. That is the best cover of that song *ever.* So beautiful! Thanks for pointing it out to me!

[identity profile] katya23.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh! 10 is Depeche Mode. I'm not sure of the title. Is it Halo?

I did one of these a while ago and I think you've already got more correct guesses than I did. I'm not sure whether to blame my odd music taste or my small flist.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It *is* Halo! Find the link for yours, if you don't mind. I'm curious to see it now.

[identity profile] katya23.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I had to go back quite a ways. I also forgot that as last resort I had G (my husband) guess some, too. But there are still some here.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
I got 3 that hadn't already been guessed. Not too shabby, huh? I had to friend you too. We seem to have a common love of 80's music. Hope you don't mind.

[identity profile] katya23.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect you would have gotten a lot more if you had been in on the start of the it.

Of course I don't mind. As long as you don't mind that I haven't been posting much recently. :D I friended you back. (I believe we also share an...appreciation of Jon Walker?)

(Oh, and hilariously, G and I heard song number 8 on the way up to Portland yesterday. I got all excited and said something along the lines of "Oh! Oh! This is that driving in the car song!" G just looked at me funny)
Edited 2008-12-24 20:47 (UTC)

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-25 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
They played that on the radio? How funny! And random, huh? LOL

An appreciation for Jon Walker. OMG YES. Check out my icon page (Panic-related stuff starts about halfway down). He is one of several Men Who Own Me™. Such a gorgeous and sweet man.

[identity profile] katya23.livejournal.com 2008-12-25 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
a gorgeous and sweet man

AND he's a bass player. Can you get any nearer to perfection? :D

[identity profile] darksylvia.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, okay, I still don't recognize any of the other ones, but the first is "Underground" by David Bowie and I know why I didn't recognize it--it's my least favorite Labyrinth song, so much so that it isn't actually in my itunes, ahaha. Though I do love the video.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Your least favorite? Huh. It's not my favorite from the soundtrack, but I wouldn't have called it my least favorite. But yeah... Labyrinth. I figured you'd get that one right off. LOL

[identity profile] rgrandixie.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
3 is you should be dancing by the Bee bGees. Now I'm off to see if I know any more.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! I knew someone on my flist had to know that one!

[identity profile] rgrandixie.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
is number 8 that Pointer Sisters song? Fire, or something? It sounds so familiar I can almost sing the lyrics in my head. It's kinda making me crazy.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep - that's it exactly! You got the two disco songs. :-D

[identity profile] rgrandixie.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol! How sad, and I barely remember disco from my youth.

[identity profile] jenepherre.livejournal.com 2008-12-24 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently you remember it better than you thought. LOL
