I give up.
Wednesday, July 12th, 2006 12:35 pmPosting from my own computer... if it actually posts.
I don't know what the fuck is going on now. After I installed WinXP Service Pack 2, my internet connection got all fucked up. It's totally hit or miss, and as slow as dial up. I have the Windows firewall turned off, so that shouldn't be a problem. Was there something else with SP2 that I'm forgetting about? One specific problem it's causing is that I cannot get any Windows updates at all. I get some error message about the Microsoft site being unable to communicate with my computer or something, and it suggests turning off the firewall or configuring it to allow the MS site - but it's already off - or checking my proxy settings to see if they're blocking communication. I don't have any proxy settings... at least not that I know of. ::heavy sigh:: This stuff is really getting old.
The thing that's really weird is that Dad was having trouble with his internet connection last night too - his problems started the same time as mine. We have a wireless network, but I'm hardwired into it - just Mom & Dad are wireless. I know the network functions even when my computer is off or unplugged, so how could a problem on my computer be affecting the network? I haven't changed any network settings. We get occasional problems with the DSL connection - usually weather related (it's beautiful and sunny here today) - but they never last this long. It's been... more than 12 hours now, I think. And I had gotten online for a few minutes before installing SP2, and things were fine.
Also... this was the first time I'd formatted a HDD that was over 100 gig, and I got some message about only being able to format it up to 137 gig (it's a 160 gig drive)... seems like I remember reading about this issue some time back, but I don't know what to do about it. And now that the drive is formatted and Windows is installed, it's showing that the drive is just 127 gig total. I tried to research it, but keep getting page not found errors since the connection is so sucky.
But... for the moment, I'm giving up. At least until I've had more sleep. This is not fun. Later all. (not spell-checked, 'cause that doesn't fucking work either)
