Good Vibrations Celebrates 10th Annual National Masturbation Month in May 2005

San Francisco, CA - April 29, 2005 - It's hard to believe that it's already been ten years since Good Vibrations launched National Masturbation Month, giving rise to one of the most popular national holidays celebrated worldwide. Good Vibrations, the legendary San Francisco-based, women-owned and operated sex toy, book and video store today announces the events scheduled for the 10th Annual National Masturbation Month this May. Throughout the month, Good Vibrations will feature a diverse line-up of activities to educate and excite people about the healthy practice of self-gratification.

National Masturbation Month Highlights

Faces of Ecstasy - A film of self-lovin'
Saturday, May 7, 5PM-8PM
Parkway Theater
1834 Park Blvd
Oakland
(510) 814-2400
$8 at the door

Celebrate orgasm with Good Vibrations Founder Emeritus Joani Blank and her unique movie "Orgasm! The Faces of Ecstasy." Joani and her colleagues from Libido Video interviewed twenty-two Bay Area residents (male, female, and trans, aged 22 to 68) and then asked them to have orgasms for the cameras. Shot only from the shoulders up, the resulting movie is an intensely intimate, yet non-explicit exploration of human sexual response, and you've never heard anything as thought-provoking as their interviews. Joani Blank will be on hand to talk about making "Orgasm! Faces of Ecstasy" -- and she'll bring some of the movie's stars to talk about their experience getting intimate with the camera. Hosted by Dr. Carol Queen, and co-sponsored by Good Vibrations and The Center for Sex & Culture. For more information visit www.goodvibes.com

"Come For A Cause" Masturbate-a-thon

Masturbation Month also means the launch of the internationally loved and renowned "Come for a Cause" Masturbate-a-thon. Back by popular demand, this is Good Vibrations 7th annual marathon of self-lovin'. Participants are encouraged to recruit their friends and co-workers to sponsor them for every minute they spend masturbating. The masturbate-a-thon will be held at the Center for Sex and Culture (CSC) on May 28 starting at 6pm. All proceeds will benefit the CSC. Pledge sheets are available on the Good Vibes web site www.goodvibes.com and at GV retail locations (Berkeley and SF).

In-Store Promotions

When you come to any Good Vibrations retail location to pick up your Masturbate-a-thon pledge form, receive a special gift. Return your pledge form with the money you raised for the marathon and receive a cool Good Vibrations "Thank You" goody. Offer available between May 1-31.

MASTURBATION MONTH FUN FACTS

Why May?

Because "the merry, merry month of May" has long been seen as symbolizing sexual awakening. Also, because "May" and "masturbation" both start with "M" -- it's nice and alliterative.

Why talk about masturbation?

Because many people still feel guilty about it, or feel they do it too much, or feel it's a second-best substitute for "real" sex. We think it's important to bring it out into the open and let people feel better about what they're doing -- and, for those who may not be doing it, we want to encourage it! Masturbation is, for many, the cornerstone to a healthy and good sex life. It isn't second-best -- it can give you the information and awareness you need to enjoy the rest of your sex life.

What about that Masturbate-A-Thon?

This is Good Vibrations' seventh year of celebrating with a pledge drive -- it's like a Walk-A-Thon, only different. Participants ask friends and loved ones to sponsor them for a certain amount of money for every minute they masturbate during the Masturbate-A-Thon. They send their pledges to Good Vibrations and GV distributes every cent of it to a worthy cause. This year, we're pleased to promote sex-positive education through our beneficiary organization, The Center for Sex & Culture. The first Masturbate-A-Thon raised $8500!

Over the past five years participants from Nunavut to Key West and from Baja to St. John's have raised over $25,000 for an important group of women's health initiatives, HIV education and treatment organizations, sex education groups, and other worthy beneficiaries. Here's a collection of sultry and sundry statistics from the history of the Masturbate-A-Thon:

  • Number of Masturbate-A-Thon pledge forms distributed since 1998: 65,000

  • Number of people who participated (those who returned pledge forms with money): 1,570

  • Number of countries with Masturbate-A-Thon participants: 6

  • Largest amount raised by an individual: $1,000

  • Longest time recorded by a participant in the Masturbate-A-Thon: 6 hours, 15 minutes

  • Total amount of money collected since 1998 through the Masturbate-A-Thon: $25,000

  • Number of television, print and radio interviews conducted regarding Masturbation Month: 375

  • Number of Masturbate-A-Thon winners who have conducted interviews about their experience: 3

  • Number of television, print, and radio interviews conducted regarding Masturbation Month : 395

  • Number of Masturbate-A-Thon winners who have conducted interviews about their experience: 4

How is the Masturbate-A-Thon judged? Where does it take place? There are no judges -- it is strictly on the honor system. People will mostly do it in privacy, although we encourage couples to do the Masturbate-A-Thon together. It can be enlightening as well as arousing!

Berkeley? As in... Berkeley? When were you there? I'm guessing you're not in the NorCal anymore? Huh. I was born in Berkeley. ::grin::

And I quite enjoyed perusing their website today... hehe

UCB is my undergrad alma mater. Class of 2000. :D

You were born there? Cool beans. I'm guessing Alta Bates Hospital. ;-> I think Berkeley is a fabulous city. While I'd rather live in SF, I'm so glad that I was able to experience the Berkeley environment that early in life. I'm moving to SoCal in a few months. :( Wish it were SF.

Hey, question - I know that Good Vibes requires you to be 21 to order online (heh, like there's any way to enforce that(, but do they have an 18+ or 21+ policy in stores? I'd imagine that it'd be 18+ since they are located in CA, and that the 21+ is just to honor the states that have that policy, but if you have any info, that'd be appreciated. Darn being between 18 and 21. sigh.

Not lame. I hadn't heard of it either. It just seemed like a fun thing to share to counteract all the angst of late.

Yep - it was Alta Bates. :-)

And YAY on moving to SoCal. It's not SF, but I suspect it's closer to SF than you are now, right?
