What I did this morning...
Wednesday, March 24th, 2004 08:08 pmA little background first... I have this tendency to grow my hair out long, then get it cut short, grow it out, cut short, etc. My hair grows relatively fast, and it's really thick. So, when I got my hair cut in July of 2001, I found out from the salon I was at that if I was getting 10 inches or more cut off, I could donate it to a non-profit group that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair for various health reasons, like chemo or radiation for cancer. There's more than one group out there doing this. The two I know of are Locks of Love and Wigs for Kids.
That haircut back in July 2001? Haven't had my hair cut since then. Seriously. I trim my bangs all the time myself, but no actual haircuts. Not only because I wanted to be able to donate my hair again, but because it's just a hassle to go out and get my hair cut. I hate doing it.
My hair - at its longest point - is down to my waist now. And with it being so thick, it weighs a ton. What some people may not realize is that all that weight can cause headaches, especially if you've got your hair up in a ponytail or some other style that concentrates all the weight of your hair into one spot on your scalp. Bad headaches. Not all the time, but it happens. I keep meaning to go get my hair cut because it's just too long to manage now, but I - obviously - don't have a regular stylist that I go to or anything. So this morning? Fed up. I'm sure you can see where this is going. I measured out 12 inches from the bottom to see what that would leave me... it would still leave it shoulder length. So I put a hair band on it at that point - 12 inches from the longest point - and cut. ::snerk:: Yes I did. Not kidding.

Ugh... can't believe I'm sharing these. No makeup on or anything. Be kind, k?

Of course, I still have to get to a stylist and get everything evened out, although I didn't do too bad. There aren't any big chunks that are way shorter or way longer than the rest. Anyway, now I just have to braid the section I cut off - it really is a foot long, although I guess it'll look shorter when braided. If I remember, I'll take a pic of it before I send it off. It's going to one of the two organizations I mentioned above. As a cancer survivor, I love that I do something to help. I'm not allowed to donate blood, so this is something nice I can do and it makes me feel good. Literally too - my headaches are better!!!! LOL
BTW, the waves in my hair are 'cause I had braided it when it was still damp after washing it, so it dried that way. Though my hair does have some natural wave to it when it's not so long to be all weighted down.
