A little background first... I have this tendency to grow my hair out long, then get it cut short, grow it out, cut short, etc.  My hair grows relatively fast, and it's really thick.  So, when I got my hair cut in July of 2001, I found out from the salon I was at that if I was getting 10 inches or more cut off, I could donate it to a non-profit group that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair for various health reasons, like chemo or radiation for cancer.  There's more than one group out there doing this.  The two I know of are Locks of Love and Wigs for Kids.

That haircut back in July 2001?  Haven't had my hair cut since then.  Seriously.  I trim my bangs all the time myself, but no actual haircuts.  Not only because I wanted to be able to donate my hair again, but because it's just a hassle to go out and get my hair cut.  I hate doing it.

My hair - at its longest point - is down to my waist now.  And with it being so thick, it weighs a ton.  What some people may not realize is that all that weight can cause headaches, especially if you've got your hair up in a ponytail or some other style that concentrates all the weight of your hair into one spot on your scalp.  Bad headaches.  Not all the time, but it happens.  I keep meaning to go get my hair cut because it's just too long to manage now, but I - obviously - don't have a regular stylist that I go to or anything.  So this morning?  Fed up.  I'm sure you can see where this is going.  I measured out 12 inches from the bottom to see what that would leave me... it would still leave it shoulder length.  So I put a hair band on it at that point - 12 inches from the longest point - and cut.  ::snerk::  Yes I did.  Not kidding.

Ugh... can't believe I'm sharing these.  No makeup on or anything.  Be kind, k?

Of course, I still have to get to a stylist and get everything evened out, although I didn't do too bad.  There aren't any big chunks that are way shorter or way longer than the rest.  Anyway, now I just have to braid the section I cut off - it really is a foot long, although I guess it'll look shorter when braided.  If I remember, I'll take a pic of it before I send it off.  It's going to one of the two organizations I mentioned above.  As a cancer survivor, I love that I do something to help.  I'm not allowed to donate blood, so this is something nice I can do and it makes me feel good.  Literally too - my headaches are better!!!!  LOL

BTW, the waves in my hair are 'cause I had braided it when it was still damp after washing it, so it dried that way. Though my hair does have some natural wave to it when it's not so long to be all weighted down.

You, and your hair, are absolutly lovely! Your hair is so thick and healthy! And the color!!! I cut my own hair sometimes, mainly because I can't stand the feel of it touching me and freak out. You have a much better reason, and you did a great job!

You have to realize it comes at least partly out of selfish reasons... laziness and my headaches. Mostly laziness though, I think. hehe I just found a way to make something good come of it. LOL

I knew you were a sweetheart, but I didn't know you were beautiful too :-) It's so nice to put a face with the name.

You've seen pics of me before... I think. Me, TeeJay, Samantha and Kristen all shared pics of each other when we were doing the MPA thing. Elsie would only show us one of her as a baby. I don't think you ever did share a pic, although I've seen some through a few of your LJ posts.

Your hair is so full, luxurious and healthy, I envy you. Mine is just a little shorther than yours was, but it's nowhere near as healthy, or of such a lovely color.

You look lovely with it very long OR shorter - and it's such a pretty colour! Well done for doing something so thoughtful and kind for those kids. I know I wouldn't have the patience to grow my hair that long so kudos to you!

Jen, you are so cute, gimme a break! Have mercy, I think that's awesome. I do that too, grow my hair out when I'm lazy then cut it short cuz I'm annoyed. With my new job, I just decided that I can't handle long hair all over the place and just cut it off. I don't think I'll grow it back, anyway, too old. Long hair is for little girls, I think. I look rather sophisticated, now. I need better pics of myself, then I'll send them to you to make new Icons, yes? hehehe, your hair looks great!

I think what you're doing is great. My hair doesn't grow very fast though, and I love it long. But, good job.

*gasp* Oh, my! It looks lovely. That must have taken a lot of courage. I remember I had my hair that length once and I cried for hours when I was forced to cut it all off. I was about six or seven.

Ooo, your hair is lovely

Both in the before and after photos, the color too - and not too much left over to even out it looks like.

You before hair is about as long as I keep mine all the time and I'd grow it longer if I could. In my case, 90% of the time, I have mine up in a Gibson Girl style as it's easier and professional looking at work and more my personal style. I never get those hair weight headaches, though. Lucky, I guess? I'm sorry that you did.

My friends and my cat get to see it down. Heh...

A good deed like this rocks. Kewl that you can can take advantage of the quick growth your hair enjoys.

Thanks for friending me. I know it's primarily because of the QAF community, though I do see we have a number of interests in common. I hope my LJ entries don't bore you to tears. *g*

Jen;

If you get down to where David is--I'll pay for the haircut. let him cut and style it for you. I will pay for it. At least when we finally set eyes on each other (which we will!) I'll know what you look like. I've shared my pic often enough you have seen me right??? Why didn't you come to Las Vegas girl-we could have met years ago. AND I began at Louise's the year after your pic. I have some of the same people too!!! Did you know that Leslie is pregnant again and with a GIRL this time???
